On March 14, 2025, Lafayette, Louisiana, lost a giant. Lloyd "Red" Lerille was more than a businessman, more than a bodybuilder, he was a friend to all who knew him. His name will forever be linked to strength, perseverance, and kindness.
For over six decades, Red didn’t just run a gym, he built a second home for thousands. He created a place where people could grow, not just in physical strength but in confidence, discipline, and character. He never stopped leading by example, showing up every morning, shaking hands, offering words of wisdom, and making sure that everyone who walked through his doors felt valued and seen.
Red was more than a gym owner, he was a man who dedicated his life to helping others. And that’s why his legacy will never fade.
A Champion Who Never Stopped Giving
Red’s journey started as an athlete, where he made his mark in bodybuilding. His dedication, discipline, and passion led him to win the prestigious Mr. America title in 1960. But his ambitions didn’t stop at personal success, he wanted to give others the tools to achieve their own greatness.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Red came home and set out to change lives. He founded Red Lerille’s Health & Racquet Club in 1963, a gym that would grow into one of the most respected and beloved fitness centers in the country.
It wasn’t just about the weights or the equipment, it was about the people. Red created a culture of encouragement and support, making sure his gym was more than a place to train; it was a place to belong.
A Friend to Everyone
Red had a way of making everyone feel important. He didn’t just know your name—he remembered your story. He asked how you were doing, checked on your progress, and celebrated your wins, no matter how small.
To him, you weren’t just a gym member. You were family.
His kindness was effortless. Whether you were a professional athlete or someone stepping into the gym for the first time, Red treated you with the same respect and encouragement. He believed in people, sometimes before they even believed in themselves.
He understood that fitness wasn’t just about lifting weights, it was about building confidence, discipline, and inner strength. And he made sure that anyone willing to put in the work had a place to grow.
A Legacy Cemented in History
Just days before his passing, it was announced that Red Lerille would be inducted into the Health and Fitness Association’s Hall of Fame. It was a long-overdue honor for a man who had dedicated his entire life to fitness and community.
But even without awards or recognition, Red’s true legacy is in the lives he changed.
It’s in the people who found confidence in themselves because of him. It’s in the friendships formed within the walls of his gym. It’s in the thousands who learned from his example, to work hard, to help others, and to never give up.
Goodbye to a Legend, But Never Forgotten
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Lafayette. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Martin & Castille’s Downtown Location.
Though Red is no longer with us, his spirit will never leave. It will live on in every weight lifted, every challenge overcome, every moment of perseverance inspired by his example.
The best way to honor him is to carry his lessons forward. Wake up early, work hard, encourage others and always keep moving forward.
Thank you, Red, for everything.
You weren’t just a gym owner. You were a mentor, an inspiration, and a friend.
You will never be forgotten.
