LSU proved once again why Alex Box Stadium is one of the toughest environments in college baseball, taking two of three games from No. 5 Tennessee in a pivotal late-April SEC showdown. With strong pitching from a freshman arm and timely hitting from young bats, the Tigers secured a critical series victory to keep their national seeding goals on track.

Game 1 – Vols Strike First

Tennessee opened the series with a statement win, jumping on LSU pitching early and riding a wave of power hitting to claim a 9–3 victory. The Volunteers launched multiple home runs and quieted the Tiger bats, handing LSU one of its few lopsided home losses of the season.

Game 2 – Curiel Sparks LSU in 12–2 Rout

LSU answered back on Saturday in emphatic fashion. Freshman Derek Curiel turned in the best performance of his young career, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, and five RBIs. His offensive explosion fueled a 12–2 win in seven innings via the run rule.

“I just trusted my approach,” Curiel said afterward. “I wanted to put good swings on the ball and keep pressure on their pitchers. It felt good to contribute like that in front of our fans.”

Game 3 – Evans Shines on the Mound

The rubber match on Sunday belonged to LSU’s pitching staff, led by freshman right-hander Casan Evans. Making his first SEC weekend start, Evans delivered six innings of two-run ball, striking out six and walking none. His poise allowed LSU to control the tempo in a tight contest. A late RBI from Jared Jones proved to be the difference in a 4–2 victory that clinched the series.

Series Takeaways

  • Freshman Impact: Curiel’s bat and Evans’ composure were the story of the weekend, showing LSU’s depth of young talent.

  • Resilience: After being humbled in Game 1, the Tigers responded with dominance in Game 2 and grit in Game 3.

  • SEC Positioning: With the series win, LSU strengthened its case for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament and kept pace in a crowded SEC West race.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers closed the month of April with momentum, heading into May with both confidence and clarity about the roles young players can play down the stretch. As the postseason picture begins to take shape, LSU’s mix of veteran power and freshman standouts makes them one of the nation’s most dangerous teams.
