The defending national champion LSU Tigers flexed their depth and power in a midweek clash at Alex Box Stadium, routing in-state foe UL Lafayette 17–4. The win pushed LSU to 23–3 overall on the season, keeping the Tigers among the nation’s hottest teams as they head deeper into SEC play.
Nine-Run First Inning Sets the Tone
LSU wasted no time putting the Ragin’ Cajuns on their heels. The Tigers sent 14 batters to the plate in the opening frame, scoring nine runs on six hits and three walks. First baseman Jared Jones delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a towering grand slam into the left-field seats, his 51st career home run, placing him seventh on the program’s all-time list.
Freshman catcher Cade Arrambide continued to impress, ripping a two-run double to the gap before adding a homer later in the game. By the end of the night, he finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a breakout performance that highlighted LSU’s next wave of talent.
Infielder Tanner Reaves capped the early surge with a two-run home run of his own, turning what could have been a competitive in-state matchup into a lopsided affair before the second inning even began.
Balanced Attack and Bullpen Steadiness
LSU piled up 11 hits, drew nine walks, and forced UL Lafayette to cycle through five pitchers in the loss. The Tigers continued to tack on runs in the middle innings, never letting the Cajuns claw back within striking distance.
On the mound, LSU turned to a mix of relievers after a short outing from its starter. The bullpen combined to allow just four runs across seven innings, striking out six and stranding runners in scoring position to preserve the wide lead.
Rivalry Flavor, Familiar Result
For LSU, beating UL Lafayette carries more than just another midweek tally. The two programs share a spirited history in Louisiana baseball, with the Ragin’ Cajuns regularly fielding competitive squads in the Sun Belt Conference. On this night, though, the talent gap was clear. LSU’s ability to string together long innings and pressure opposing pitchers underlined why the Tigers remain a top national contender.
What’s Next
The victory serves as a momentum booster heading into a critical SEC stretch. LSU now turns to a weekend showdown with Mississippi State, one of the league’s traditional power programs. Head coach Jay Johnson noted earlier in the week that his team’s ability to “score in bunches” is a separator — and Tuesday night’s performance was a perfect example.
If LSU can pair explosive bats with consistent pitching, the Tigers will be well-positioned to defend their national crown and push toward another run in Omaha
